Tuition has taught me alot. Just the other day, i was going through a mcq question with my sec 2 student about the particulate nature of matter. The question was something like that:

Which of the following are matters?
i) light
ii) shadow
iii) heat energy

a) all the above
b) none of the above
c) i and ii
d) ii and iii

The answer is obviously b and i was waiting for the student to give his answer. After a few moments of silence, i prompted him for an answer by asking him what was a shadow and what was matter and hoped he would solve the question by elimination.

He replied, " The brightest light passes through the darkest shadow."

Knowing how he likes to give me nonsensical answers and asking out of the world questions. I immediately dismissed his answer and told him the definition of matter, (has weight and takes up space). However, upon fully digesting what he said, i realised that despite it being irrelevant, his answer was really meaningful and thought-provoking!

Like wow! I didnt expect it from a sec 2 or him! He told me he read the quote from a book. Hmm, that must be a good book he is reading then! I should probably re-evaluate my role as a tutor and start learning from my students as well!
